The plastic free challenge

 The plastic Free challenge

Have you heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? It’s a mass of floating rubbish in the Pacific Ocean. Most of the rubbish is plastic that’s been thrown away by humans. The students of Room 5 at Motueka South School watched a video about it. The video showed images of dead or injured sea creatures. Some had eaten the plastic. Others had become tangled in it.

ThE STaTiSTicS The Great Pacific Garbage Patch: • covers about 1.6 million square kilometers (nearly six times the size of New Zealand!) • is made up of about 80 million kilograms of plastic. Scientists believe that over a million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine mammals die each year from eating plastic.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch We were amazed that there was so much plastic in the ocean. Plastic is made from oil. It breaks down into little pieces, but it never ever goes away! We then so in The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Plastic is killing animals – I want to help save them.

The students wanted to do something to help solve the plastic problem. That’s how the Plastic-free Challenge began. The challenge begins The class made Tuesdays the day for the challenge to be plastic-free. It wasn’t hard to reduce the amount of plastic in lunchboxes. The students wrapped their sandwiches in lunch paper instead of cling film. They replaced shop-bought muesli bars with home-made ones. They brought fruit instead of other snacks. The amount of plastic went down fast. It was a good start, but what about the rest of the school? How much plastic was being brought by other classes? The students wanted to find out. On Tuesday, Room 5 collected the whole school’s plastic rubbish. They were shocked – there was so much! Maybe we could have a challenge, where one day a week, we bring a lunchbox with no plastic in it. The challenge goes school-wide Room 5 decided to challenge the whole school to join Plastic-free Tuesday. At the assembly, they showed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch video to the other students. Everyone was silent when they saw the photos of the sea creatures. Then Nikson and Pepper walked onstage. They were carrying a net full of plastic – the rubbish Room 5 had collected in only one day. The hall was filled with sounds of shock and surprise. Room 5 knew they had everyone hooked. The challenge was on!

Some Room 5 students teamed up with buddies from Room 6 to make models of sea creatures. Every Tuesday, Room 5 collected the school’s plastic rubbish and stuffed it into the model creatures. To begin with, the creatures needed to be large. As the weeks passed, the creatures became smaller. After seven weeks, the amount of plastic had reduced by half! What do we do with all the plastic? Room 5 was really pleased that people were using less plastic. However, now they had another problem – a huge pile of plastic in their classroom! What could they do with it? Then Ryan saw a headline in the paper: “Soft plastic recycling has landed.” The article said the major supermarkets were collecting soft plastic for recycling. This was just what the group needed. They sorted the plastic into different types. Then they bundled it up and took it to a nearby supermarket. Daily collection Room 5 had solved the problem of what to do with the plastic. But then they asked themselves, “Why only Tuesdays?” They decided it was time for daily collections across the school. This was turning into a big project! They made a plan. First, they found out where they could buy recycling bins. Then they made two lists – things that could be recycled and things that couldn’t. They took photos of the recyclable items and made a poster to put on the bins. That way, everyone would know what should go in them. The students presented their plan to the principal. He agreed that it was a great idea – the daily school-wide rubbish collection was underway.

why marine reserves are important

 Why are marine reserves important?

How do these photos make you feel?

Which photo stood out for you and why? What questions do you have?

Atawhai has fledged now, so chapter closed, right? Kāo/no. Royal Cam is a cyclical program, and adolescents are coming back, new eggs will be laid, and new chicks will hatch. It also means we’ll run more Name the Chick competitions. So in advance of that, let’s talk about how Atawhai got her name, and respond to the question we got a lot about why the name was in te Reo Māori, and why each previous Royal Cam name has been too. First, a fast background on Royal Cam. Since 2016, we’ve had a 24-hour live stream of a Toroa/Northern Royal albatross nest during the breeding season at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head.

Every year the camera focuses on a nest, from nesting to fledging, and the chick inevitably steals hearts. Every chick is special, but Atawhai was our lockdown chick. Connecting with nature digitally while staying at home in our bubbles was great for the wellbeing of cam viewers, both here and overseas. The camera on the peninsula (which is currently run in partnership with Cornell Lab of Ornithology) also offers a deeper look at some of the challenges of conservation, including Over the years on camera there have been some ups:

WHY IS WATER IMPORTANT FOR LIFE ? ? ? ?

Today I have been learning about why water is Important for life? ??
I think that water is important for life because it keeps us going and what I mean by that is that it keeps you strong and created.
Here are the reasons why water is important for life.
without water, you can not survive and that's why your water, for example, half of your body is water. water is an important need for all life on earth. without water, most things on the planet would not survive. here are the things why water is important?
I agree that water is important because without water on earth people can die but I'm not saying that you are going to die.
and again without water plants can not grow, one other thing without trees we can also die.

TUPAIA

16 Tuesday, June 2020

Today I have been learning about The Story” Tupaia, I have been reading, reading, reading all about it and
it was an amazing experience.
A Man of mana
Tupaia was born on Rā‘iātea – the second-largest island in East Polynesia – around 1725. He was from a
high-ranking family and showed talent from a young age. Because of his gifts, Tupaia was chosen to train
with the ‘Mario – an exclusive group of priests, navigators, warriors, musicians, and artists who worshipped the war god, ‘Oro.
A prophecy

In the 1750s, warriors from nearby Bora Bora invaded Rā‘iātea. A local priest named Vaita went into a
trance
and uttered a prophecy. One day, more people would come – a different kind of people altogether.
They would arrive on a canoe with no outrigger and would change everything: “And this land will be taken by
them,” Vanita said. “The old rules will be destroyed.” Vanita's prophecy eventually came true. On 18 June
1767, a strange vessel was seen off the coast of Tahiti, where Tupaia now lived. The next morning, ‘arioi
priests paddled out to investigate. The boat was the Dolphin, a British ship searching for the unknown
southern continent. Samuel Wallis and his crew were the first Europeans the Tahitians had ever seen.

Time zone

BANG!!! WHAT A SURPRISING DAY WE HAVE HERE ABOUT TIME ZONE.
TODAY I AND MY CLASS WERE LEARNING ABOUT TIME ZONE.
TIME ZONE  IS LIKE WHEN YOUR CHRAPED IN A TIME BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY EARTH.
SO THE THERE IS ONILY ONE SUN AND FOR US THERE ARE DEFRENT DAYS SO THE EARTH SPINS AROUND TE SUN THAT MEANS THAT WE HAVE LIGHT AND NIGHT.
SO THE EARTH SPENS ANR WHEN WE HAVE LIGHT THE THAT MEANS THAT WE ARE FACING THE LIGHT WITCH IS THE SUN AND WHEN IT IS DARK THEN THAT  MEANS THAT WERE NOT FACING THE SUN.
IF YOU HAVE BEEN OUT OF SPACE THEN YOU HAVE SEEN STERS AND WHEN YOU IN EARTH YOU CAN ALSO SEE THE STARS BUT FROME DOWN IN EARTH IT LOOKS SO SMOLL BUT WHEN YOU UP IN THE  SPACE THE YOU CAN  SEE IT BIG.
WHEN YOU SEE THE STARS THEN THAT MEANS THAT IT IS NIGHT TIME.

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY!!

WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT TIME ZONE IN EARTH AND OUT OF EARTH!!
WHAT DID YOU FIND CHALLENGING DURING TIME ZONE!!

WERE ON EARTH

WOW!! TODAY I AND MY CLASS WERE DOING WERE ON EARTH.
TODAY I AND MY CLASS WERE SOLVING QWESHDENS ABOUT WERE ON EARTH.

1. WHY IT IS USEFUL TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY A LOCATION?
because if someone loses they can call someone where they are from there to address but if there is no address then you can call someone and tell them what it looks like from where you are or if someone is with you then you can ask them if they know where they are you can ask them some qweshdens.
Latitude and longitude are used to describe the position of any point on the surface of the earth.
Latitude and longitude are angles.
On the surface of the planet, the distance between two points that are 1 degree of latitude apart is approximately 111 KM.
There is a slight variation because the Earth is not a perfect sphere.

WERE ON EARTH

TODAY I HAVE BEEN READING A GOOGLE SLIDE AND IT WAS ABOUT WERE ON EARTH.
Polynesian peoples skilfully navigation across thousands of kilometres of the ocean using sophisticated navigation techniques. navigation skills were highly valued and were passed down orally, often by song. important facts have memorised the motion of specific stars and where these stars would rise and set on the ocean, weather conditions, times of travel, wildlife species and could formations on a particular island, the direction of ocean swells, colours of sea and sky, angles for approaching harbours.

DURING LOCK DOWN

captain cook

Today I have been reading a book called CAPTAIN COOK.
THE BOOK WAS ABOUT CHARTING OUR ISLANDS.
ON THE MAP cooks charts were published in 1773. Although they showed he hadn't found a great southern continent, his work still hades a huge impact.
The British now knew a lot more about the south pacific and what could be a hundred years, helped people travel safely from the other side of the world.

HOW DID COOK USE MATHS IN HIS CHART MAKING?
BY making a map and making line dots on the map so that whoever is going to find out what cook did during the past years.

WHY WAS MATHS IMPORTANT TO HIM
Because he could keep track of where he was and even were hi was traveling, what the time was when he was finding out the mystery of the world, to solve the mystery of the world.
cook need both latitude and longitude
to chart the island of New Zealand he need these to mark landmarks .cook would plot these on his chart these were important for him to do a running survey.
WHAT I ENJOYED
what I enjoyed was that you learn new things and that you can help others to learn about what you learned.
WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT CAPTAIN COOK.
WHAT DID YOU ENJOY.

TOOLKET

Today me and my class were doing Toolkit.

WHAT I LIKED
What I liked about the Toolkit was that you learn more things and that you can help others to learn new things like what I liked and you can also try out the new things that you have learned, not only that but You can help others with their learning but to help support and teach.

WHAT I ENJOYED
What I enjoyed was that they were teaching me and my class all about new stuff like how to make you OWN Kahoot and what to call it and you can also make it about maths reading or even writing.

WHAT I FOUND CHALLENGING
What I found challenging was that you" I was making my own Kahoot but some times you can't always do it because you can keep trying.
WHAT I LEARNED
what I learned was that you can make your own Kahoot and you can name it anything and you can make the  Kahoot
about anything.

HMS ENDEAVOUR

Today I have been learning about HMS Endeavour?
What I learned was that As the captain on three voyages of discovery in the late eighteenth
century, James Cook became the first European to define the outline of New Zealand.

Thanks to cooks' detailed charts and his gentleman passengers' scientific and artistic
documentation, Accurate knowledge of New Zealand was available in Europe for the first time
from the 1770s.
